Is There a Link Between Smoking and Cancer?
Smoking is specifically related to around 87% of all cases of lung cancer and it is believed to have a role in 30% of all cancer deaths. Smoking is a contributory factor in the development of cancer of the bladder, pancreas, kidney, throat and mouth. Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals and how individuals react to these depends on biological factors and genetics. It is estimated that between 10% and 15% of long-term smokers die of lung cancer and this figure does not include those smokers who died from other smoking related illness such as heart attacks or strokes.
